Herb Boxes

Community herbs are ready for the picking

South Shropshire town develops new ‘pick your own’ herb boxes. Sustainable Wenlock, a local group in Much Wenlock, have planted some communal herbs in the town centre for local residents and visitors to help themselves to.

The herb boxes were made by a local craftsman using recycled planks of Shropshire Oak, supplied by Shropshire Hardwoods, and potted up with a selection of herbs for people to pick and enjoy.

Jodie Griffith, who coordinated the project, said “Much Wenlock already has a small community orchard on Southfield Road, and we wanted to extend this by providing free herbs for people to use in their cooking.”

Jodie went on to say “The group Sustainable Wenlock have been working with the Town Council and others to plant up some edible herbs for people to use. The herb boxes are situated outside the Back Lane Car Park on the High Street, and everyone is welcome to them!”

Tim Coleshaw, of Sustainable Wenlock, has designed some information sheets about the herb varieties to go on the boxes so people know what the different herbs are and what they can be used for.

Sustainable Wenlock are also working with a number of other local community groups and the Town Council to develop a Harvest Festival in the town on Saturday 24th September to continue the local food theme.
